This is the $99 Apple case you’ll want if you own AirPods Pro
- Apple just released a standalone Magsafe USB-C case for the AirPods Pro.
- Owners of Lightning AirPods Pro 2 models without magsafe charging can now upgrade only the case.
- Previously, you had to buy the new AirPods Pro 2 if you wanted to enjoy the USB-C case.
For those entrenched in the Apple ecosystem, the days of using separate charging cables for everything are closer than ever to being a thing of the past.
Apple just released a standalone charging case for second generation AirPods Pro that has USB-C charging instead of the Lightning port featured when the second generation AirPods Pro was first released. Like the older Lightning version, it’s also compatible with MagSafe chargers. It costs $99, and is available in the AirPods “accessories” category on Apple’s website.
Back in September, the company released a new version of the second generation AirPods Pro that came with a USB-C charging case, but there wasn’t any way for users of the older version of the second-gen AirPods Pro to buy just the updated case — until now.
Though many might just wait until they need to buy new headphones entirely, any users who want to get ahead of the curve on the USB-C transition now have the option to.
Most Apple devices have been migrating toward USB-C charging for a while — the 2022 finalization of an EU law enforcing a USB-C standard across a range of consumer electronics has only been an additional push.
The MacBook Pro has had USB-C charging ports for years, though many users were initially frustrated by the transition to USB-C. Apple’s been gradually transitioning its iPads to USB-C charging over the last few years. And the new iPhone 15 released this fall now uses a USB-C charging cable too — a major change.
Soon, there really might be one cable to charge them all.
